Hear the howl in the night

Ben Stein’s ‘Expelled’ April 18

I am really astounded (not) by the vitriolic attitude of the atheist and evolutionary circles. Now, I have to wonder what they are so afraid of. I for one plan to see the film and make my own judgments as to how good a job Mr. Stein does in bringing this long standing controversy to light. Do I believe there is a problem with ‘Big Science’? Yes, I do, and I can speak from experience, as can my husband. Denying a problem doesn’t make it go away.

I think there is a big problem when one, insignificant and highly unproven theorem has such a stranglehold on science and society. It has nothing to do with most areas of science other than to mislead them in how they interpret evidence. But how many fields really solely rely on historical observation? Does where we come from really matter in the analytical chemist’s lab or to a doctor in the operating room? I never needed it as an analytical or formulation chemist, but does that still mean I have to espouse believe in something so wholly unrelated to what I do? Why should my job and my schooling hinge on something so arbitrary?

And when I wonder at this, it makes me question what the real deal behind shoving evolution down everyone’s throat really is. It leads me to surmise that this isn’t really a matter of it being important to scientific inquiry, but rather, it is a doctrine to support their belief that there is no God or ‘creator.’ Isn’t that quite a thought? To think that they have their presuppositions just like IDers and Creationists. The atheistic evolutionists’ premise that guides them is that there is no God or creator; our premise that guides us is that there is a creator. So simple, but so divisive. Premises that totally change how you view the world around you.

There is an effect though. The effect of evolution is to reduce science to mere politics and dogmatic doctrine rather than what it is meant to be: inquiry into the world around us. Rather than embrace different ideas and see if they have any merit we see paltry attacks on people, from elementary schools up through the workplace, in churches, laboratories, college campuses, and in private settings. From both sides the attacks come. Why? Because people are not taught how to truly defend their beliefs. They are indoctrinated with evolutionary ideals in public schools, but never really taught to disseminate the information and verify it. Others are taught to just believe in God because we should with no teaching in how to truly defend their beliefs or to know why they have them. Blind faith seems to plague both sides. And the insults go back and forth because they have no other way to defend themselves.

Both have failed. The church failed when they compromised the Bible, when they let evolution have a toehold. The church continues to fail by either maintaining their compromise positions or failing to properly teach people about the issues. The atheist has failed because they have done nothing more than create a new, albeit Godless, religion, with fallible, cruel men in place of God. In trying to solve what they viewed as the world’s biggest problem (religion), they created an even bigger one, one that denies accountability and design; a problem that has permeated every aspect of society; a problem that rears its ugly head with the news of every school shooting, with the breakdown of families, with the increase in crime, and in the discrimination on every level in society.

So, should you go and see Ben Stein’s film? If you believe in freedom of speech and if you believe in being able to think for yourself, then yes, you should. But if you are afraid, afraid of hearing something contrary to evolution, afraid of being challenged, afraid to let others have the right to express their beliefs, then maybe it is best you stayed home.
