Hear the howl in the night

My Letter to Senator Ted Kaufman, Senator, D-DE

This is in response to the way his office behaved today when I called to tell them I opposed a bill (and no, I didn’t go into a tirade, I simply said I opposed it):

Senator Kaufman,

I called your office today to voice my oposition to S.909, the Matthew Shepherd Hate Crimes Bill, and was disappointed by the response.  Instead of duly noting my oposition to the bill and determining where I was from and passing my concerns along, they promptly tried to supply me with propaganda in support of the bill.  I have also received unsolicited propaganda e-mails from your office.

Let’s get a few things straight:

1) You work for your constituents.  If I oppose something it is my right to do so and your job to listen to that opposition.  You are not in office because the people of Delaware need you to form opinions or ideals for them.  You are there to represent Delawarians, your employers.  Some will agree with you and some will disagree.

2) Unfortunately, you are technically a duly appointed representative of the governor, not the people of Delaware, because we did not elect you to office.  Whether I would have voted for or against you is moot because I was not given that opportunity.  I consider you to be in that position illegitimately no matter what anyone says.  Biden did this state a disservice by not withdrawing from the senate race and the governor has done this state a disservice by appointing a senator that we did not even get to vote on.

3) I don’t really care if you are a big supporter or backer of something I am opposed to.  Just because you support it and I oppose it does not make you right.  My opposition is founded in my own research and value system.  You do not have to agree with those beliefs or ideas, but as a representative you must duly note that your constituents may not support everything or anything that you do.  I am offended that rather than note my opposition you would choose to ignore it.  If your constituents overwhelmingly disagree or agree with a piece of legislation, then it is your job to uphold your constituents’ choice, not do whatever you want despite them.

While I’m voicing opposition, take note that I also do not support the “cap and trade” bill or government run healthcare either.  They are disastrous for the people of this country.  I’m sure you have stacks of propaganda as to why you support the further destruction of this country under the guise of somehow helping everyone, but I am not interested.

Take note that I am undeclared because I see the party system as failed system and I do not align myself with any politician simply because of what party they belong to. I support those who uphold the constitution and the freedoms guaranteed to this great nation through our founding documents.  If you oppose those ideals or support legislation that is in opposition to those ideals, then you do not have my support.
